Abstract
SHS investigation development is considered from the geographical and historical viewpoint. 3 stages are described. Within Stage 1 the work was carried out in the Department of the Institute of Chemical Physics in Chernogolovka where the scientific discovery had been made. At Stage 2 the interest to SHS arose in different cities and towns of the former USSR. Within Stage 3 SHS entered the international scene. Now SHS processes and products are being studied in more than 50 countries.
Abstract
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the compositions and uses of the various grades of steels in the austenitic class. The phenomena of deformation-induced transformation (DIM) and sensitisation are then covered. The underlying mechanisms causing DIM and sensitisation, together with the factors affecting them, are discussed in detail. Mechanical stabilisation, recent research findings on and methods for detecting DIM and sensitisation are also covered.
Keywords:
Austenitic stainless steel, metastable austenitic stainless steel, deformation-induced martensite, martensitic transformation, sensitisation, desensitisation, healing, mechanical stabilisation, phase diagram, ε martensite, α’ martensite, EPR test, grain boundary engineering.
