Abstract

Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD), the simultaneous anaerobic digestion (AD) of two or more substrates, has emerged as an improvement to AD of pure substrates due to its many advantages, such as synergistic effects on microorganisms, nutrient balance, higher methane yield per unit of digester volume and, therefore, enhancing the economic viability of AD plants. Considering this background, the aim of this mini review was to describe and discuss substrates used in anaerobic codigestion with the purpose of increasing biomethane production. A brief discussion about the modeling done to this process was also made.
