The gut microbiome has emerged as a crucial factor in the prognosis and progression of gastrointestinal cancers, though its mechanisms remain largely unknown. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the current research on the use of gut microbiome signatures as prognostic biomarkers in gastrointestinal cancers. We present an overview of emerging studies that explore microbial signatures as biomarkers for different gastrointestinal cancers, and explore the potential benefits and limitations of using these signatures as prognostic tools. Finally, we discuss how these microbial signatures can be harnessed to improve the detection, prevention, and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.
